Of all the gifts that we afford one another,
telling each other the truth should have been foremost because it’s more
honourable. However, proffering truth requires sincerity and unfortunately the
new form of sincerity is: accept the provisions, praise the provider and damn
every other recipient, and for so long as it is to your gain - but what a
backside if the provider ceases to give or own what he used to hold.
That’s the time you’ll see the judgmental side
of humankind. That’s the time all your faults, your imperfections and the
wounds you had inflicted but was never told will be laid bare, and that hidden
nemesis that used to undermine your worth will come in the open feeling amused that
you’re suffering a reverse that you never saw coming.
That’s the time you’ll realise that the only supportive
companion you had was that held “hater” that used to tell you the truth, the
one that remained who he was and made sure you knew what he really was, the one
you mistreated because he kept it real. And when all the once-upon-a-times abandon you, he’ll still be by your side because
he is real like that.
The users and abusers that used to be your favoured
beneficiaries will narrate disfavours that never occurred. That’s the time
you’ll recognise the hypocrites who stood between you and your genuine lovers.
That’s the time you’ll regret your excitement about the numbers in those who pretend to think a lot of you, and not bothered about the fakes amongst
them.
I know someone who used to be very well-fixed, so kind and well
thought-of. If you go to his house, the shoes at the entrance feels like that of a mosque, because
of people going in with their problems and coming out with smiles. Today he may
not be flat broke but he’s barely getting by and naturally cannot do those
things he used to do. Now even if he goes to a social event, those same people
that used to look up to him don’t even recognise his presence.
But Auntie Maya Angelo said: “…if people avoid you, you will have more
time to meditate and do fine research on a cure for whatever truly afflicts
you.”
