Someone said “courtesy costs
nothing, but buys everything” and I believe…these days unfortunately, when
people fail to exercise civility and you rebuke their indiscipline, you’re termed rude, particularly if they’re a little older;
but who is more unmannerly than someone who cannot perform any gesture out of
respect for others, someone who cannot even stand in line to responsibly wait
for his turn, someone who’s all the time looking for an occasion to display
superiority.
I am not generalising, and I am not a big fan of meaningless etiquette, but when it comes
to the observance of simple common rules and codes of decent conduct, I believe
a lot of us are a sad failure, and it appears that no one wants to be reminded.
People act as if not doing things right has become the newest form of
sophistication.
Some of us cannot speak nicely,
but we expect others to speak pleasantly to us. We want others to be friendly
towards us, but we cannot do the same in return. We cannot show genuine
interest in anything that’s not of personal benefit. We are neither kind with
praises nor guarded about criticisms. Is like everyone is a king of his own
kingdom, and no one wants to serve anyone, but everyone wants to use everyone.
The other day I decelerated to
allow this pedestrian to cross the road, and she was walking like some
constipated model walking a catwalk, and that kind of conduct is not uncommon.
Go to the car park in the evening and see how chaotic it is. No one cares if
someone is elderly, sick or pregnant. Younger folks will toss stuff through
bus windows to take possession of a spot; or you'll see fifty-ten
passengers all trying to get a spot on a 14seater van, causing avoidable strife
You give someone a ride and he
gets to his destination, yells “Driver Mai Ma Fii”, and wouldn’t even bother to
say ‘Thank You!”…Certain corporations, businesses and places of work have
become showground for arrogance, with pompous clients and stuck-up customer
care personnel and professionals. No one wants to accept a wrong, much less
apologise.
