Dear God,
Last night I happened upon Gamou Sabar -
(seneweb.com). It was claimed to be a Gamo with ‘Tabala’
(sacred drum). I saw religious-looking men chanting your venerable names and singing
praises of your beloved prophet, but the fact that the ladies outnumbered the
men and none of them was adequately covered makes it weird.
In fact I could visibly see the colourful ‘Bin bins’ (waist-beads) and ‘Bethios’ (hand knitted wrappers) that some of them were wearing, displaying dance moves like ‘yuza, boulko laal boul ko jeggeh’ and the rest, and I got confused.
For my part, what they call it doesn’t matter, because
what I saw was ‘sabar, bu garaaw teh saf sap’ and I have always heard that
music, singing and dancing are haram. Now
I want to know if it’s O.K to do it in the name of God, ‘ndah gayi denj toppa
sen banekhou bakan rek?’ I am asking this because I once thought of starting ‘Dub
Sermons’, like preaching over reggae rhythms. I thought it will be interesting,
but of course with your go-ahead.
On a serious note, scratch the above and hear
me out. The world’s becoming unsuitably liberal and we cannot sit by and wait
for calamity. We pray you protect us all from all the temptations of this
temporal dwelling, forgive the sins that we may have already committed and the
sins of all departed souls, have mercy on us, save us from rejecting your word,
prevent us from justifying immorality or getting pleasure from evil.
God, we have no doubts that one day we’ll stand
before you and answer for every gulp of air we take, make that day easy for us,
and give us the prudence to repent ahead of that day ….Amen!
Your faithful and obedient servant
Omar Touray
